Starbucks asks, “Coffee, Tea or mp3?”
In the near future, if all goes according to plan, you may be able to load your MP3 player while waiting in line for a double half-caf soy latte. Starbucks, which already sells CDs in most of its stores, and which has experimented with CD-burning kiosks, plans to set up what the company calls “device fill-up” terminals in its stores. The company says it is in discussions with several companies about developing the service. While it’s too early to speculate about whose software or DRM the service will use, it’s worth noting that the Starbucks CD-burning kiosks are powered by HP hardware and Microsoft software, and the two companies (which happen to be neighbors of a sort) have also collaborated on wireless services in the past.

iPods from a Vending Machine
The coolest thing (besides the big annoucements) I have heard of from MacWorld was the iPod vending machine. Apparently there was just that at the Argent Hotel during the MacWorld Expo. The ZoomShop vending machine was full of shuffles, nanos, and video iPods, even iPod accessories. Something for your every whim right at the push of a button (& your credit card).

Google and Apple named “Most Influential” in 2005
According to a poll conducted by Brandchannel, Google, with Apple in a close second place finish, are the most influential brands of 2005. Apple has earned this distinction twice, while Google has been honored three times, in as many years. Finishing out the top five this year are Skype, Starbucks and Ikea.

QuarkXpress 7 beta released
After nearly a year of anticipation, Quark has finaly released a beta of QuarkExpress 7 giving us a sneak peak at what the much anticipated program will offer. Apparently, with this new release, Quark is making a valiant effort to reclaim the design professionals it lost to Adobe’s InDesign. A full release of QuarkXpress 7 is expected during second quarter 2006.

Google execs keep $1 salaries
Google execs Brin, Page, & Shmidt have once again agreed to be paid annual salaries of $1 each in 2006, counting instead on stock options and grants of the company’s volatile stock for their pay.
